Steve Ugrich
Executive Chairman

Steve Ugrich, Southeast Directional Drilling’s current Executive Chairman began his work in the drilling industry in the mid-90s, working as an operator and ultimately the general superintendent at Ozzies. After several years at Ozzies, on July 22, 2002, Ugrich started SEDD and began his position as President of the company. As former President, Ugrich believes that SEDD operates as a family oriented company wherein everybody knows everybody, from the names of spouses, to the age of coworker’s children. Now being Executive Chairman, Ugrich upholds the idea of SEDD’s employees taking “pride in THEIR job working for THEIR company.” Since the company’s inception in 2002, Ugrich has enjoyed watching a company that started with two rigs grow to fifteen rigs, all while being promoted organically within the company.

Todd Barton
President

Southeast Directional Drilling’s President Todd Barton began working in the drilling industry in 1997 at Cherrington Co. as a laborer after his time in the US Navy. While at Cherrington, Barton operated equipment and surveyed for two years. Barton continued to do surveying at INROCK where he was introduced to Ozzies Directional Drilling and current SEDD Executive Chairman Steve Ugrich. Ugrich soon had Barton join Ozzies as a surveyor until 2002 due to Ozzies closing their doors and SEDD opening theirs. Barton ultimately decided to join Ugrich at Southeast Directional Drilling and worked as a staff surveyor until 2007 when he was brought into the office to do estimating. For the course of 5 years Barton worked his way up to his current position as President. As President, Barton tries “every day to maintain the family feel for the company,” and instill a sense of integrity and dedication.  Barton believes that one of best parts of working at SEDD is the people that surround him in the field and those in the office he sees every day.

Charley Patterson
Chief Financial Officer

Chief Financial Officer Charley Patterson, joined Southeast Directional Drilling in December of 2009.  Beginning at KPMG, over his career Patterson has gained extensive experience in financial accounting, manufacturing and construction that allows him to manage the monetary side of the business. Patterson believes that SEDD distinguishes itself from other HDD companies in its perseverance to complete every drill it starts and never walking away from a job until they are happy with their work. Patterson believes that SEDD has core values of “integrity and safety that directly influence every action we take in the field.  We are seriously committed to making sure all the people who work for us return to their families every night”. Patterson’s favorite aspect of working at SEDD is “Southeast is on the cutting edge of returning America to energy independence and helping to fuel America’s resurgence as a manufacturing powerhouse.  This means American dollars and jobs can stay at home will all of the positive things that entails.”

John Heieie
VP Research & Development

Southeast Directional Drilling’s Vice President of Research and Development, John Heieie, became involved in the drilling industry in 1998. The inception of his drilling career began at Ozzies where he specialized in hydraulic repairs. After Ozzies closed their doors, Heieie continued in the repairs department at SEDD, and designed unique equipment for specific jobs. To Heieie, one of the main things that differentiates SEDD from other drilling companies is the level of dedication that comes from the employees. He believes that “our employees will go the extra mile to get the job done.” Through his years of working at SEDD, Heieie’s favorite aspect of working for SEDD is that every day continues to be different.

Kyle Pellinen
General Superintendent

Southeast Directional Drilling’s General Superintendent, Kyle Pellinen began working in the drilling trade in the fall of 1999 at Ozzies as a laborer. Pellinen’s experience consists of working as a driller, and the majority of his time working as an operator. Pellinen has found that some of the main defining factors of SEDD is the instilled work ethic as well as the pride that is engrained within both the company and its employees. With this pride, Pellinen believes comes a sense of high expectations as well as accomplishment. Where a sense of family can become lost in a company’s rise to success, Pellinen’s favorite part of SEDD is “how far we have come together as a company.” In these 12 years of SEDD business, Pellinen has always appreciated how “we’ve all grown and learned together.”
